GROUNDED

Laura Aguilar’s Grounded (2006-2007) was preceded by Nature Self-Portrait (1996), Stillness (1999), Motion (1999) and Center (2000) and the last series of nude self-portraits in nature completed by the photographer before her passing in 2018. Aguilar chose Joshua Tree National Park as the ecological backdrop for this last series. The artist felt a deep, familial affinity for the rich color and vast, monumental boulders that frame the landscape and her body. It was a place of spiritual communion and peace. Grounded is her most visually spectacular and enthralling series of nude self-portraits in nature. These digital images are the most recognizable works of color in the artists’ oeuvre.
