Latina Lesbians
Emerging out of her own personal identity struggles with her Chicana identity, sexuality, learning disabilities, and depression, Latina Lesbians is photographer Laura Aguilar’s first series to gain public acclaim. In this five year spanning portrait series, Aguilar documents women from the Los Angeles Chicana Lesbian community, including herself, who proudly reflect upon their sexual identities in handwritten texts beneath their portraits. Aguilar wrote about this series in the text below.
“This series is a vehicle to educate and to provide a better understanding of what it’s like to be a Latina and a lesbian. By showing positive images Latina Lesbians allowed us to share ourselves openly, to provide role models, to break negative stereotypes, to develop a bridge of understanding, an opportunity to explore ourselves and others, and to express our own beauty, strength and dignity.” –Laura Aguilar
